AMICAALL is an alliance of African Mayors’ initiative for Community action on AIDS at the local, level, a net work of local government authorities, mayors and municipal leaders committed to supporting sustainable solutions to the HIV/AIDS epidemic at the local level. In December 1997 a group of Mayors and Municipal leaders met in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivore and during a special symposium on HIV and AIDS they resolved to form an Alliance on HIV and AIDS. The Abidjan Declaration was signed and in 1998 AMICAALL was officially launched during Africities conference held in Abidjan. In April 2001, UN-AMICAALL partnership Program set up in Geneva with support of UNDP and UNAIDS and in March 2002, the Alliance Secretariat was set up in Windhoek, Namibia. The overall goal of the Alliance is to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS and to mitigate the social and economic impact of the epidemic on local authorities in Africa. The Alliance is currently operating in 13 African countries member countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Uganda, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivore, Mali and Cameroun.
